Speaking directly to parents raising Black children in a world of racialized violence, this guidebook combines powerful storytelling with practical exercises, encouraging readers to imagine methods of parenting rooted in liberation rather than fear.

In 2016, activist and mother Trina Greene Brown created the virtual multimedia platform Parenting for Liberation to connect, inspire, and uplift Black parents. In this book, she pairs personal anecdotes with open-ended reflective prompts; together, they help readers dismantle harmful narratives about the Black family and imagine anti-oppressive parenting methods.

Parenting for Liberation: A Guide for Raising Black Children fills a critical gap in currently available, timely parenting resources. Rooted in an Afrofuturistic vision of connectivity and inspiration, the community created within these pages works to image a world that amplifies Black girl magic and Black boy joy, and everything in between.

"Trina Greene Brown has created a guide for Black parents who want to raise fierce, fearless, joyful children. She knows what a challenge this is given the state of the world but argues that liberated parenting is possible if we commit to knowing and trusting ourselves, our children, and our communities. Anyone curious about how to walk with a child through tumultuous times needs to read this book now." —Dani McClain, author of We Live for the We: The Political Power of Black Motherhood

Parenting for Liberation allows all of us to raise Black children to be their most liberated selves, and ultimately helps us be more free too.” —Mia Birdsong, author of How We Show Up: Reclaiming Family, Friendship, and Community

"As a 'woke' Black mom, I’ve been on a never-ending quest to find a book that would enable me to shift my parenting lens from one based on trauma to one of freedom and joy. Trina Greene-Brown has written that book!" —A. Rochaun Meadows-Fernandez, writer for "On Parenting," Washington Post

Parenting for Liberation was founded by Trina Greene Brown with a mission is to support Black parents to heal from historical and ongoing trauma & interrupt intergenerational violence to build resilient and joyful Black families in community.

Recognized as an Inspirational Parent in 2018 by CADRE and as a Black Feminist Rising in 2017 by Black Women’s Blueprint, Trina Greene Brown is a leader on the rise and she’s taking Black parents and children along with her to higher heights. Bridging her 15 years of professional experience as a youth organizer in ending violence with her personal role as a parent of two Black children, Trina Greene Brown is a proud Black-feminist Mama-activist. In 2016, she founded Parenting for Liberation as a virtual platform for Black parents, currently consisting of a blog, podcast, and in-person trainings and conferences. Trina has contributed to “On Parenting” for the Washington Post, and in 2019, her writing centered on intersections of motherhood and activism was featured in the Chicana M(other)work Anthology. Her book “Parenting for Liberation: A Guide for Raising Black Children” debuted on Juneteenth 2020 by Feminist Press.
